DHMO Hoax

This morning I went to a website called www.dhmo.org. It was about a chemical called Dihydrogen monoxide. The website told me about all the dangers of this chemical. This chemical is found in cancer, causes sickness, and poses many other threats to humans and animals. I started asking myself "Why isn't the government doing anything about this?".

Later I found out it was all a hoax. Dihydrogen monoxide is really just the chemical name for water. The facts on the website were true, but just not as dangerous as the web pages led me to believe.

I learned important information from this experience. I learned that I should not believe everything I see from a website. I should always verify the information I obtain with other sources before deciding to believe it as true. Also, I should think about what I read and ask myself "Even if this looks professional, does it really seem like something that would be true?".

  1. Brandi - well said! I'm glad you were able to learn this valuable lesson. Tomorrow we will talk about how to identify accurate information online. It's not easy, but it's also not impossible. This exercise was meant to do just what it did: help you all see the need to be accurate and careful in your online research!
